RELASI NEGATIF; POLIGAMI DAN KESETARAAN GENDER

Muh Subhan Ashari

Abstract

This study aims to reinterpret the Islamic view of polygamy issues.
Polygamy is a term which is used to denote a husband who marry with
more than one wife, whether marry with two wives, three wives, ten
wifes and so on to unlimited. The author admits that Islam -in the
early days- allowed polygamy in the framework of tadarruj fi-syar’i
(gradual in giving the law). Then Islam limits polygamy with four
wives, which a husband can only have a maximum of four wives.
Many Liberals and Western thinkers mock Islam because of islamic
view that allows poligamy, but the facts prove that Islam is actually
trying to eradicate polygamy in people’s lives. In the Arab tradition,
having many wives is a common thing, even a pride, but when Islam
came, he limits and preven this tradition.
Many people often blind their eyes what Islam has done so much,
in an effort to appreciate and improve women’s degrees. They were only
concerned on the view of Islam that allows polygamy, then accuses
Islam of degrading women’s self-esteem. Keep in mind that Islam came
at a time when women’s self esteem was at the lowest limit. Islam came when a father feels embarrassed when he had a daughter, then without feeling guilty they buried him alive a red baby girl. Islam came at a time when women ware treated like slaves by men, but Islam cames and wiped out all the stupid traditions, violence against women. Islam governs the relationships betwen men and women with a marriage, so that every woman can get and claim her rights, Islam always teaches us to treat women gently and affectionately.
